Our unique collection of basalt fountains are a great way to introduce the sound of running water to your garden, no matter the size. These fountains have gained immense popularity among homeowners wanting to enhance the appeal of their garden space. While typically sold in sets of 3 of varying heights, single basalt fountains create beautiful focal points as well.

What are Basalt Columns? Basalt is a volcanic rock and one of the most common types of rock in the world. Although it is common, it is rare to fine the long solid columns of basalt like we have in our products. The skin or crust on the outside of the columns will have a patina that ranges from beige to red to black and will often contain a variety of colors. The inside of the basalt is black and polishes up to a rich luster. Basalt is a dense crystalline material, about 10% heavier than granite.

The base used to support the weight of these dense columns needs to be of the right thickness and be supportive and not cave over time. The AquaBox basins are the best choice when installing a basalt column fountain.

Winterizing Basalt Fountains

If you live in a climate that experiences prolonged freezing conditions then we recommend removing the pump from the basin. Place the pump in a bucket of water if you have an “oil-and-seals” type pump and store it in a place that will not freeze. If you have a mag-drive pump, just clean and store.

Do not drain the basin during the winter months- allow the water to freeze in the basin so that the ground doesn’t cause the basin to rise or “pop up” from expansion of the freezing soil around it.

The Rock Columns are manufactured to withstand freezing conditions and can be left outside during the winter months. There is no need to cover the Rock Columns.
