Azolla is a nitrogen-harboring true fern that is able to multiply its weight three times each week during the summer months.
It is a small, flat, diminutive, moss-like floating water plant that floats freely on the surface, often forming extensive reddish mats.
Young Azolla is generally bright green, becoming pink, red, or dark brown as the plant matures and when exposed to strong sunlight.
Upon close examination, these floating water plants consist of many tiny ferns with multiple pairs of individual overlapping scale-like leaves that resemble a cedar leaf. Each plant may have a branching stem with several pairs of leaves, but only a single dangling root.
Azolla fern is an excellent source of supplemental food for koi and goldfish, or looks especially good when allowed to root and grow on the moist ledge of a waterfall or stream.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS: Simply place in water and plant will float freely.
FERTILIZATION: Fertilization is typically not needed for Azolla as they take excess nutrients from your pond water. If needed, Microbe-Lift® Bloom & Grow™ can be used.
PLANT MAINTENANCE: For best results, trim or prune as leaves begin to turn yellow or brown, remove them completely, discarding them to keep as much excess organic material out of water-body as possible.
WINTER CARE: In Zones 8 and lower, discard Azolla after the first hard frost.
