Question:

“Do you have a feel for how heavy the largest basalt column is and roughly what the diameter of the columns are? We are very interested in this fountain and just want to make sure we can handle it on our end a as diy.”

Blue Thumb Answer:

The Hollowed Out Basalt is the largest in diameter of our Basalt Columns. They choose thicker stones giving them enough room to carve hout the hollow space and leave room for a stable wall. I would say these are 14-16" in diameter and about 8 lbs per inch of height. If you have a dolly you can move these columns one at a time, and the largest would take two people to set in place.

Winterizing Basalt Fountains: 

If you live in a climate that experiences prolonged freezing conditions then we recommend removing the pump from the basin. Place the pump in a bucket of water if you have an “oil-and-seals” type pump and store it in a place that will not freeze. If you have a mag-drive pump, just clean and store.

Do not drain the basin during the winter months- allow the water to freeze in the basin so that the ground doesn’t cause the basin to rise or “pop up” from expansion of the freezing soil around it.

The Rock Columns are manufactured to withstand freezing conditions and can be left outside during the winter months. There is no need to cover the Rock Columns.
